Mazda 6

Impressive Mazda is one of the class front-runners.

Driving
Mazda has developed the 6 with an emphasis on driver involvement. It feels very together, with an electrically-assisted steering system offering nimbleness that belies the car’s dimensions. The
6 always feels light on its toes and ready for action, while the suspension provides excellent ride comfort. Road noise, one of the criticisms levelled at the previous generation motor, is substantially reduced and, overall, the 6 has a much more grown-up feel. There’s a wide range of engines available, including a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that revs crisply and effortlessly, providing ample pace, while the precise gearchange makes shifting ratios a pleasure.

Marketplace
The 6 is a very important car for Mazda, and the company hopes to really move the game on with this current version. The company is chasing premium offerings from BMW, Audi and Mercedes, in an effort to reverse slowing sales. Impressively, the new model is bigger, faster, more economical, yet lighter. But despite Mazda’s claims, it’s still going to be competing with the Ford Mondeo, Volkswagen Passat and Honda accord for the hearts of its key buyers, company car drivers. Three petrol options will probably be outsold by the 2.0-litre diesel, while all versions of a trim line-up that includes TS, TS2 and SL variants are well-equipped. Three bodystyles are available – hatchback, saloon and estate.

Owning
There’s more than a hint of Lexus to the Mazda’s chiselled design, helped by short overhangs at both ends and pronounced swooping wheelarches. Aerodynamics are class-leading, which also helps fuel economy. Interior quality is something to behold, too, with an expensive feel and neat touches such as steering wheel controls for the audio, sat nav and climate control. A long wheelbase means taller passengers have ample room in the back, while the boot offers a useful 519 litres of space. There are, however, a few bits of cheap plastic, which let down the otherwise well-crafted interior.Source
